This blog covers a birding trip to Peru by three birders from Buckinghamshire, UK.  The trip was run by local Peru company GreenTOURS.  The tour was between the dates 24th September 2025 and 10th October 2025.

Itinerary

Sep 24 wed     Lima

                    Arrival in Lima. 

Sep 25 thu Lima
Explore the Pacific coast along the Lurín river and “Lomas de Asia” reserve. On the way back to Lima, we stop at the “Villa Marshes” reserve, 
Return to the hotel in Lima.

Sep 26 fri Lima

Early morning pelagic excursion from Pucusana. 

Overnight at hotel El Tambo 2

 

Sep 27 sat  Santa Eulalia valley

Drive along the Santa Eulalia valley and onto the western slopes of the Andes.

Later, at higher altitudes (up to 3,100 meters).

Overnight in the town of Santa Eulalia.

 

Sep 28 sun Santa Eulalia valley

A very early and birding at about 3,850 meters of altitude.  Then onto Millpo lake.

We then drive over the mountain pass at an elevation of 4,800 meters. 

Spend the night a small hotel in the town of San Mateo, located at an elevation of 3100 meters.

Sep 29 mon    Lima - Tarapoto

Early morning drive back to Lima. Then flight to the city of Tarapoto, in the eastern slope of the Andes. Today, we visit the Cordillera Escalera and the Aconabikh reserves. 

Overnight in Tarapoto, hotel Rio Cumbaza.

 

Sep 30 tue Tarapoto - Moyobamba

First, early morning, we drive to Ricuricocha lake and then towards Moyobamba. There, we stay overnight at Waqanki lodge, where the gardens and hummingbird feeders are good.

Oct 1 wed Moyobamba - Arena Blanca

We spend the morning at Morro de Calzada reserve, which is a lone mountain in the middle of the valley.

After lunch, we drive to the Arena Blanca Reserve to view the hummingbird feeders 

Overnight at Arena Blanca lodge.

 

Oct 2 thu    Arena Blanca reserve

We spend the morning at the hummingbird feeders. T

Late afternoon we visit a Cock-of-the Rock lek nearby the reserve.

Oct 3 fri      Arena Blanca - Abra Patricia

We drive up the mountains. The first stop is at La Llanteria hummingbird feeders. Then, onto Fundo Alto Nieva and finally Abra Patricia.

Overnight at Abra Patricia Owlet lodge.

 

Oct 4 sat    Abra Patricia

We spend the first hours of the day at the hummingbird feeders.

Then, we can explore the trails around the lodge, 

At night we visit the Bosque del Toro forest.

Oct 5 sun   Abra Patricia - Huembo - Leymebamba

First, in the early morning, we drive to Huembo.  We also explore the Rio Chido road, 

Later, in the afternoon, we drive along the Utcubamba valley towards the town of Leymebamba. A

Overnight at Rangra Wasi lodge.

 

Oct 6 mon  Leymebamba

First, in the morning we explore the Rio Atuén valley and then, we plan to spend the afternoon at higher elevations.

Overnight at Rangra Wasi lodge.

 

Oct 7 tue    Leymebamba - Celendin

Today, we take the road to go across the Marañon valley.

Overnight in Celendín, hotel Villa Madrid**.

 

Oct 8 wed  Celendin - Cajamarca

This morning, we drive to the city of Cajamarca. 

Then, we spend the afternoon in a drier habitat near the town of Jesús

Overnight at Hotel Tartar.

 

Oct 9 thu    Cajamarca

This morning, we go to the Chonta valley  Then, after lunch, we move to Cerro El Gavilán 

Overnight in Cajamarca.

 

Oct 10 fri    Cajamarca

Today, we will take you to the airport for the flight to Lima.
